Dilatation and unfolding of the aorta in a Jamaican population.

چکیده
In the year 1959-60 a team from the Medical Research Council's Pneumoconiosis Research Unit, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Jamaica, undertook a chest X-ray survey of a rural population in Jamaica with the primary objective of determining the prevalence of pulmonary tuberculosis (Miall and Rerrie, 1961). During the reading of the 70 mm. films, we were struck by the high prevalence of aortic and other cardiovascular abnormalities. As the survey had been carried out in a geographically defined population in which over 90 per cent of subjects were X-rayed, it was possible to compare the characteristics of those with radiologically detected cardiovascular abnormalities with those of an age and sex matched control group drawn by random methods from those subjects in the same population who were free of such abnormalities. This paper reports the results of this comparison. It is generally accepted that cardiovascular screening by mass radiography is a useful and practical procedure and the technique has been widely used, particularly in the United States (Thompson et al., 1961). Cochrane (1960) has reported the results of such a survey from Barbados, and Wattley (1960) from Trinidad. This is, as far as we know, the first time that an attempt has been made to use a control group to determine the wtiology of the abnormalities.

Nigella sativa seed decreases endothelial dysfunction in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat aorta
Objective: Diabetes is an important risk factor for cardiovascular events. The great percent of morbidity in patients with diabetes is due to endothelial dysfunction. The present study investigated the effects of hydroalcholic extract of Nigella sativa (N. sativa) on contractile and dilatation response of isolated aorta in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat. Materials and Methods: Rats ...
متن کاملAortic dimensions and stiffness in normal adults.
Practicing physicians are familiar with the term “aortic unfolding,” which is used in chest X-ray reports to describe an aging change and generally assume that this term represents proximal aortic dilation. “Unfolding” is often associated with aortic calcification, which implies aortic degeneration. The degree of ascending aortic dilation with age is relatively small and out of proportion to th...
متن کاملUnfolding X-ray spectrum in the diagnostic range using the Monte Carlo Code MCNP5
Introduction: Unfolding X-ray spectrum is a powerful tool for quality control of X-ray tubes. Generally, the acquisition of the X-ray spectrum in diagnostic radiology departments is complicated and difficult due to high photon flux. Measurement of x ray spectra using radiation detectors could not be performed accurately, because of the pulse pile up. Therefore, indirect methods...
متن کاملThe Nutcracker Syndrome: an Underdiagnosed Cause for High Grade Varicocele
Background: The nutcracker syndrome represents a clinical condition caused by compression of the left renal vein (LRV) between the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and the aorta. One of its manifestations is left-sided varicocele. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of nutcracker syndrome in patients with primary and recurrent high grade left-sided varicocele. Methods: Fifty pa...
متن کاملComparative Effects of Metformin and Glibenclamide on Aortic Reactivity to Vasodilator and Vasoconstrictor Agents in STZ-Induced Diabetic Rats
Background: Diabetes is an important risk factor for cardiovascular events. Endothelial dysfunction is the main reason cause of disability and death in diabetic patients and death. The present study investigates the effects of metformin and glibenclamide on vasoconstrictive and vasodilative responses in the diabetic rat aorta. Methods: Rats were divided into four experimental groups (con...
